Collective Mothering and the Medical Model – EJP Letter (1996)

Collective Mothering and the Medical Model – EJP Letter (1996)2017-04-07T02:55:03+00:00

Resource Description

A Letter in response to Emmy van Deurzen-Smith's 1996 paper 'The Future of Psychotherapy', taking issue with her suggestion that some of what used to be the intuitive art and craft of mothering could and should now be provided by a scientifically validated counselling profession. I suggest that whilst the public do project 'mother' onto counselling and counsellors, that this is a mixed blessing and a definition of our work which we ourselves do not need to subscribe to. In fact, I warn against taking this self-definition on board as it is likely to seriously limit and restrict our work.
